Arlette is a French girl's name with a long history but no settled meaning. Its most famous early bearer was Herleva, also called Arlette, the daughter of a tanner or undertaker of Falaise in Normandy and the mother of William the Conqueror, who became king of England in 1066. Name lists explain it in different ways, as a diminutive built on a Germanic word for "eagle", as a form of Adèle, "noble", or as the French form of Herleva, but we could not confirm any of these in a reference work, so we leave the meaning open. It is said ar-LET.
