Esther is the Persian name of the Jewish queen of the Book of Esther, whose Hebrew name was Hadassah, "myrtle" (Esther 2:7). Strong's concordance marks Esther as a Persian name without giving a meaning, while the Brown-Driver-Briggs lexicon on the same page links it to Persian stāra, "star". The Jewish Encyclopedia records that derivation alongside another from Ishtar, the Babylonian goddess, so "star" is plausible but not proven. In the story Esther, the cousin and adopted daughter of Mordecai, becomes queen to King Ahasuerus and risks her life to save her people from destruction, the deliverance Jews remember each year at the festival of Purim. Baby-name lists give "star".
