Isla is a Scottish name taken from Islay, an island of the Inner Hebrides known for its whisky distilleries, and from two Scottish rivers called Isla. The island is recorded as Ilea in the seventh century by Adomnán, the biographer of Saint Columba; its Gaelic name is Ìle, and the root is thought to be older than Gaelic, with no known meaning. Name lists give Isla as "island", which happens to be the meaning of the Spanish word isla, from Latin insula, but that is a coincidence rather than the name's origin. It is pronounced EYE-luh, with a silent s. The actress Isla Fisher is a well-known bearer.
