Thresia is the form of Teresa used by Kerala's Christians. The origin of Teresa is uncertain; a common suggestion connects it with Greek therizō, 'to harvest, to reap', as Strong's Concordance defines it, which is where the popular meaning 'harvester' comes from, but this cannot be proved. The name carries special weight in Kerala because of St Mariam Thresia Chiramel Mankidiyan (1876–1926) of Thrissur, founder of the Congregation of the Holy Family, whom Pope Francis canonised in 2019. The name also recalls Teresa of Avila and St Teresa of Kolkata.
