Arlo is a modern English-language name with no agreed meaning. Its earliest known use is in Edmund Spenser's poem The Faerie Queene, which places a meeting of the gods on "Arlo-hill"; the Irish scholar P. W. Joyce identified this with Galtymore, the peak above the vale of Aherlow in County Tipperary. A later bearer is the American folk singer Arlo Guthrie. Name lists offer "fortified hill" or link it to a Spanish word for the barberry shrub, but we could not confirm either as the source of the name, so we treat it as a modern name chosen for its bright, easy sound.
