Boaz is the generous landowner of Bethlehem in the Book of Ruth, who lets Ruth glean in his fields, marries her and becomes the great-grandfather of King David. The same name was given to one of the two bronze pillars at the entrance of Solomon's temple. Strong's Concordance says the root is of uncertain meaning, and the Brown-Driver-Briggs lexicon suggests 'quickness' only with a question mark. Name lists usually give 'strength' or 'swiftness'. Boaz is used by Christian families in South India and the Northeast.
