Emmett is an English surname that has become a first name. It is usually explained as coming from Emmet, a medieval pet form of the woman's name Emma, which the Online Etymology Dictionary traces to Germanic ermin, "whole, universal"; we could not confirm the surname link in a dictionary. Name lists often give "truth", borrowing the Hebrew word ʾemet, which Strong's defines as firmness, faithfulness and truth, but there is no evidence that the English name comes from it. English also has an old dialect word emmet, "ant". Families choose the name for its warm, gentle sound, and it is easy to say.
