Genevieve is the English spelling of the French Geneviève, from Latin Genovefa. It is the name of Saint Genevieve, born around 420 at Nanterre near Paris, who became the city's patron saint. When Attila's Huns approached in 451 she is said to have persuaded the women of Paris to pray and fast rather than flee, and the city was spared. The origin of the name is uncertain: it may be Germanic, from words for kin and woman, or Gaulish, from genos, "family". Name lists often give "white wave", but that meaning belongs to Guinevere, a different name. It shortens to Gen or Evie.
