Charlie meaning
Charlie is an international unisex name of Germanic origin (English pet form), used for both girls and boys.
Pet form of Charles or Charlotte, from a Germanic word for 'man'
Also used to mean: free man, strong
Charlie is the friendly short form of Charles and, for girls, of Charlotte. Etymonline traces Charles to Carolus, the Latin form of a Germanic word for "man" or "husband", Old High German karl. Old English had the same word as ceorl, which Bosworth-Toller's dictionary defines as a man, a husband and a free man of the common people, which is where the popular meaning "free man" comes from. Once mainly a nickname, Charlie is now given as a full first name to both boys and girls. Its most famous bearer is the film comedian Charlie Chaplin.
