Gabriel (גַּבְרִיאֵל) is the archangel of the Book of Daniel and the Gospel of Luke. Strong's concordance builds the Hebrew Gabriy'el from geber, "a man" or "a valiant man", and El, "God", and both Strong's and the Brown-Driver-Briggs lexicon give "man of God". In Daniel 8:16 and 9:21 Gabriel explains Daniel's visions, and in Luke he announces the births of John the Baptist and of Jesus, the scene known as the Annunciation. In Islam the same archangel is Jibrīl, who brings God's revelation to the Prophet Muhammad. Baby-name lists usually give "God is my strength", which leans on the root gabar, "to be strong, prevail"; the lexicons themselves give "man of God".
