Jeremiah meaning
Jeremiah is an international and Christian boy's name of Hebrew origin.
Yah exalts, or Yah loosens; the sources differ
Also used to mean: God will exalt, appointed by God
Jeremiah is the Hebrew name Yirməyāhû, the name of the prophet whose book records his long ministry in Jerusalem before and during its fall to Babylon. The reference works read it in two ways. Strong's Concordance (H3414) derives it from rûm, "to be high", giving "Jah will rise" or "God will exalt"; Brown-Driver-Briggs tentatively prefers a root meaning "to loosen", perhaps in the sense of opening the womb. Name lists add "appointed by God", which neither source gives. Jeremiah is also traditionally linked with the Book of Lamentations. Jerry and Jem are short forms, and the full name is easy for Indian families to say.
