Jonathan meaning
Jonathan is an international and Christian boy's name of Hebrew origin.
Jehovah-given; "the LORD has given"
Jonathan comes from Hebrew Yehonathan, which joins the divine name Yhwh with nathan, 'to give'. Strong's glosses it 'Jehovah-given' and the NAS concordance 'the LORD has given', and Strong's notes that four Israelites in the Bible bear it. The best known is Jonathan, son of King Saul, whose loyal friendship with the young David is one of the most famous in the Old Testament. Baby-name lists give 'gift of God', which matches the Hebrew. Later bearers include the Irish writer Jonathan Swift. Said JON-uh-thun, it is often shortened to Jon.
