Matthias meaning
Matthias is a Christian boy's name of Hebrew origin (via Greek).
Shortened form of Mattathias (Mattithyah): gift of Jah
Also used to mean: gift of God
Matthias is a New Testament name. Strong's Concordance (G3159) calls it a shortened form of Mattathias, the Greek for Hebrew Mattithyah, which Strong's builds from mattath, "gift", and Jah, a short form of the divine name, so "gift of God"; Matthew comes from the same Hebrew. In Acts 1 the apostles cast lots between two disciples who had followed Jesus from the beginning, and the lot fell on Matthias, who took the place of Judas among the Twelve. His feast is kept on 14 May in the Roman calendar. In India the spelling Mathias is used, especially in Mangalore and Kerala.
