Mathi (மதி) is a Tamil unisex name, used for both girls and boys.
The moon; also intellect, understanding
Mathi (மதி) carries two Tamil words that happen to share one form. The Tamil Lexicon of the University of Madras lists mati, the moon or full moon, and on the same page mati, understanding or intelligence, a loan from Sanskrit mati. The moon sense is familiar from devotional poetry: the opening verse of Andal's Tiruppavai speaks of a day in the month of Margazhi when the moon, mati, is full. Name lists give both meanings, usually "moon" or "intelligent". Mathi also forms the second half of many Tamil names, such as Anbumathi and Venmathi, and on its own it is used for both boys and girls.
