Matangi meaning
Matangi (मातंगी) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, मा, it is a Simha rashi name (Magha nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
A form of Durga, one of the ten Mahāvidyās
Matangi (मातंगी) is the feminine of Sanskrit mātaṅga, "an elephant", a word also used for the chief or best of its kind. Monier-Williams lists Mātaṅgī as the mythical mother of the elephant tribe in the epics, as a form of the goddess Durgā, and as one of the ten Mahāvidyās, the goddesses of Tantric worship. Matangi is honoured as a goddess of speech, music and learning and is often described as a Tantric form of Saraswati. Families choose the name for this goddess; in South India it is often spelt Mathangi.
In Hindu tradition this is a name of Durga.
