Amos is the name of the Hebrew prophet whose book stands third among the twelve Minor Prophets. A shepherd and fig-grower from Tekoa, he spoke out against injustice in eighth-century BC Israel. The name comes from the verb amas, 'to load' or 'to carry a burden', and Strong's Concordance glosses it 'burdensome'. Name lists usually give 'carried by God' or 'borne by God', a devotional reading of the same root, since the name itself does not mention God. Amos is used by Christian families across South India and the Northeast.
