Lorraine meaning
Lorraine is a Christian girl's name of French origin (from Medieval Latin).
The region of Lorraine: Lotharingia, 'Lothar's realm'
Also used to mean: from Lorraine
Lorraine is the name of a region of north-eastern France used as a given name. The Online Etymology Dictionary traces the region to Medieval Latin Lotharingia, "Lothar's realm", the middle kingdom given to the Frankish emperor Lothair I in the division of 843 and passed to his son Lothair II. Lothar itself is an old Germanic name, Hlothari, which etymonline explains as "famous warrior". In Catholic memory the region is linked with Saint Joan of Arc, who was born at Domrémy on its border. In India it is used in Mangalorean, Goan and Anglo-Indian families.
