Lourdes is a devotional name taken from the small town in the French Pyrenees where, as Britannica records, fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous saw a series of visions of the Virgin Mary in the Massabielle grotto in 1858. Pope Pius IX approved devotion to the apparitions, and Lourdes became one of the great pilgrimage places of the Catholic world. Parents give the name to honour Our Lady of Lourdes, whose feast falls on 11 February. It is used in Goa and Mangalore, while Tamil Catholics use the form Lourdu, as in Lourdu Mary and Lourdusamy.
