Atlas meaning
Atlas is an international boy's name of Greek origin.
The Titan who bears up the heavens; traditionally "the bearer"
Also used to mean: bearer of the heavens, enduring, strong
Atlas is the Titan of Greek myth who holds up the sky. Liddell-Scott-Jones describe him in the Odyssey as the god who bears the pillars of heaven, and derive the name from a root meaning "to bear, to endure", so it is traditionally read as "the bearer". The Online Etymology Dictionary adds that some scholars think the name may be an older non-Greek word for a mountain, reshaped by the Greeks, so the sense is not certain. The Atlas Mountains of North Africa and the Atlantic Ocean are named after him, and since Mercator a book of maps has been called an atlas.
