Bodie is a modern boy's name whose origin is not settled. Name lists give several explanations: a pet form of the German name Bode, said to mean "messenger", an English or Scottish surname, or a respelling of Bodhi, the Sanskrit word for awakening or enlightenment that Indian parents already know. We could not confirm any of these as the source of the name, so we leave the meaning open. In America the spelling is also known from Bodie, a California gold-rush town named after the prospector Waterman Bodey and now kept as a ghost town in a state park. It is said BOH-dee.
