Edward meaning
Edward is an international boy's name of Old English origin.
Guardian of prosperity: ēad "wealth, happiness" + weard "guardian"
Also used to mean: wealthy guardian, rich protector
Edward is the Old English name Eadweard, which the Online Etymology Dictionary glosses as "prosperity-guard": ēad means wealth, prosperity or happiness, and weard means a guardian or keeper, the same word as English ward and warden. It was borne by Anglo-Saxon kings, including Saint Edward the Confessor, and eight later kings of England and Britain. Edward VII, who reigned from 1901 to 1910, was also Emperor of India, and many institutions of that era in India carry his name. Ed, Eddie, Ned and Ted are its short forms.
