Eliza meaning
Eliza is a Christian and international girl's name of Hebrew origin (via English).
God of the oath; a short form of Elizabeth (Hebrew Eliysheba)
Also used to mean: pledged to God
Eliza began as a short form of Elizabeth in the sixteenth century and was used as a name in its own right from the eighteenth. Elizabeth comes, through the Greek Elisabet of the New Testament, from the Hebrew Eliysheba, the name of Aaron's wife, which Strong's Concordance builds from El, "God", and shaba, "to swear" or "to take an oath". The meaning is therefore "God of the oath", which name lists render as "God is my oath" or "pledged to God". In the New Testament Elizabeth is the mother of John the Baptist and a relative of Mary. Eliza is used in Christian families in India, where it sits alongside Elizabeth, Elisa and Lizzy.
