Julius is the Latin Iulius, the name of the Roman family to which Julius Caesar belonged. Lewis & Short record it as a family name, note that the month of July, once called Quinctilis, was renamed after it, and give no meaning. Name lists translate it "youthful" or "downy-bearded" from a proposed link with Greek ioulos, the first growth of a beard, which remains a guess. Christian bearers include Pope Saint Julius I and Pope Julius II, patron of Michelangelo and Raphael. In India Julius is used in Christian families in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
