Lavina is a form of Lavinia, a name from Roman legend. Lewis & Short identify Lavinia as the daughter of King Latinus and the wife of Aeneas, the Trojan hero of Virgil's Aeneid, and legend says the town of Lavinium was named after her; the dictionary gives no meaning for the name itself. Name lists render it "woman of Rome", which paraphrases the story, or "purity", which seems to come from a likeness to Latin lavare, "to wash", and is not supported. In India Lavina is used in Mangalorean Catholic families.
