Julia is the feminine form of Julius, the name of the Roman family (gens) of Julius Caesar and the emperor Augustus. Lewis & Short record Iulius as a family name, and the month of July was named after Caesar. The New Testament has one Julia: Paul sends greetings to her among the Christians of Rome in Romans 16:15. Name lists usually say Julia means "youthful", linking it to Latin iuvenis, "young", but the dictionaries we checked give the name only as a family name, so that sense is a popular reading. Julia is short, easy to say in every Indian language and sits comfortably before most Indian surnames.
