Juliette is the French pet form of Julie, which comes from Latin Iulia, the feminine of the Roman family name Iulius. The Online Etymology Dictionary traces the English form Juliet to Italian Giulietta, a diminutive of Giulia, and compares French Juliette. The name is best known from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1590s), in which Juliet Capulet is the young heroine of Verona. Name lists give Juliette the meaning "youthful", as for Julia, but the dictionaries treat the root only as a family name. In India it is said "joo-lee-ET", and it works well with both Christian and other Indian surnames.
