Juliana is the feminine of Latin Iulianus, "belonging to Julius". Lewis & Short record Iulius as the name of a Roman family, made famous by Julius Caesar and Augustus, and give it no meaning. The gloss "youthful" seen on name lists comes from an old guess linking the family name with Greek ioulos, the first down of a beard, which the dictionaries do not support. Christians know the name through Saint Juliana of Nicomedia, an early martyr, and Saint Juliana Falconieri of Florence. It is used in Kerala, Goa and Mangalore, and Julie is a short form.
