Lottie is an English pet form of Charlotte that is now also given on its own. The Online Etymology Dictionary explains Charlotte as the French feminine of Charlot, a pet form of Charles, which goes back through Medieval Latin Carolus to the Germanic name Karl, literally "man, husband". Name lists usually give Lottie as "free" or "free woman", but the dictionary gives the root only as "man", so "free" is a popular reading rather than the word's recorded sense. Lottie Dod, who won Wimbledon in 1887 at the age of fifteen, is a famous bearer. It is said LOT-ee, and Charlotte can be kept as a formal name.
