Mark is the English form of the Latin first name Marcus, a Roman first name, as in Marcus Tullius Cicero. Strong's Concordance lists the New Testament Markos simply as of Latin origin and gives no meaning, and Lewis and Short's Latin dictionary records Marcus as a first name without a derivation. Name lists today usually connect it with Mars, the Roman god of war, and give "warlike"; that link is widely repeated but is not shown in these dictionaries. In the New Testament John Mark is a companion of Paul and Barnabas, and tradition names Mark as the author of the second Gospel; Saint Mark is the patron saint of Venice. The name is used in Christian families in India.
