Soma (सोमा) is the feminine form of Sanskrit soma, which Monier-Williams derives from the root su; in Vedic ritual the priests pressed the plant's stalks between stones. The masculine soma is that sacred juice, the plant itself and, in later texts, the moon and the moon god. The feminine somā has narrower senses: the Soma plant, an Apsaras or celestial nymph in the Mahābhārata, a river in the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa and a queen named in inscriptions. Indian name lists usually give Soma as "moon". That sense belongs to the masculine word, so for the girl's name it is a borrowed meaning rather than the feminine word's own. Soma is a girl's name used in Bengal.
