Sonam meaning
Sonam (सोनम) is a Hindu girl's name of Tibetan origin (bsod nams). By its first sound, सो, it is a Kumbh rashi name (Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Merit, good fortune (Tibetan bsod nams)
Also used to mean: lucky, fortunate
Sonam (सोनम) is a Tibetan name, from bsod nams (བསོད་ནམས), "merit". In Tibetan Buddhism it is the word for the Sanskrit puṇya, the store of good that comes from virtuous actions, and Tibetan dictionaries also give it the everyday senses of "good fortune" and "luck". The name is used in Tibetan, Bhutanese and Nepalese families, where it is given to boys as well as girls, and it is also used in North India, mostly for girls. Indian name lists usually give Sonam as "lucky" or "fortunate", which fits the Tibetan; a link with Hindi sonā, "gold", is sometimes suggested but is not its origin. Well-known bearers include the actress Sonam Kapoor and the Ladakhi engineer Sonam Wangchuk.
