Stanley meaning
Stanley is an international boy's name of Old English origin.
Stony meadow: Old English stán, "stone", and léah, "lea, meadow"
Stanley is an English place name, found in several counties, that became a surname and then a first name. It joins Old English stán, which Bosworth-Toller gives as a stone, whether for building or for grinding, and léah, 'a lea' or 'meadow', usually a clearing in woodland. So a Stanley was a stony field or clearing. The surname gained prestige through the Stanley family, earls of Derby, and later through the explorer Henry Morton Stanley. As a first name it was carried by the film director Stanley Kubrick. Baby-name lists give 'stony meadow', which matches. It is said STAN-lee.
