Sutton meaning
Sutton is an international unisex name of Old English origin (surname from a place name), used for both girls and boys.
South farm: Old English sūþ, "south", and tūn, "farm"
Also used to mean: southern homestead, south town
Sutton is an English surname taken from one of the many villages called Sutton. The English Place-Name Society explains the name as "south farm", from Old English sūþ, "south", and tūn, which Bosworth-Toller's dictionary gives as an enclosure, farm, estate or village; the same word later became town. A Sutton was usually south of a neighbouring settlement, though the survey cannot always say which. In America it is now given to both girls and boys, and the Broadway actress Sutton Foster is a well-known bearer. It is said SUT-un, and its two short syllables sit well with Indian surnames.
