Scarlett meaning
Scarlett is an international girl's name of English origin (from Old French).
Scarlet, a bright red; originally a rich cloth
Scarlett comes from the English word scarlet, a brilliant red. The Online Etymology Dictionary explains that Old French escarlate first meant a rich, fine cloth, often dyed red, and that the colour sense appears around 1300; the word's ultimate source is uncertain, often said to be Middle Eastern but perhaps Germanic. The name, with its double t, was made famous by Scarlett O'Hara, the headstrong heroine of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind (1936) and its 1939 film. It is said SKAAR-lit, and its colour links it with Indian names such as Lalima and Arunima.
