Maverick meaning
Maverick is an international boy's name of English origin (American).
An unbranded calf; an independent, unconventional person
Also used to mean: nonconformist
Maverick is an American English word that became a first name. The Online Etymology Dictionary records it from 1867 for a calf or steer found without an owner's brand, named after Samuel A. Maverick, a Texas cattle owner who was notoriously careless about branding his herd. By the 1880s the word also meant an independent person who will not follow the herd, and that sense spread in the 1930s. Baby-name lists give 'independent' or 'nonconformist', which matches. The word is familiar worldwide from the Top Gun films, whose hero uses it as his call sign. It is said MAV-er-ik.
