Ujjaini meaning

Also used to mean: victorious
Ujjaini (उज्जयिनी, Bengali উজ্জয়িনী) is the Sanskrit name of Ujjain, the ancient city of Avanti on the Shipra river. Monier-Williams records ujjayinī as the city once ruled by Vikramāditya, one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus, and the place from which old Indian astronomers measured longitude. Kālidāsa praises it in the Meghadūta, and it still hosts the Kumbh Mela. The city's name is often explained as "the victorious", from ud and ji, "to conquer", but the dictionary does not give that etymology. As a girls' name it is chiefly Bengali.
