Uttara meaning
Uttara (उत्तरा) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, उ, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The north; daughter of Virāṭa in the Mahābhārata
Also used to mean: higher, better
Uttara (उत्तरा) is the feminine of Sanskrit uttara, "upper, higher, superior" and "northern", since the north was thought of as the higher ground. Monier-Williams gives uttarā as "the north" and as the name of the princess Uttarā, daughter of King Virāṭa of Matsya. In the Mahābhārata Arjuna teaches her dance while in disguise, she marries his son Abhimanyu, and her son Parīkṣit continues the Pāṇḍava line. The word also names several nakṣatras, such as Uttarā Phalgunī. Name lists give Uttara as "north", "higher" or "better", in line with the dictionary.
