Anto is a short form of Antony that Kerala's Christian families often give as a full name, the way Croatians use Anto for Antun. Antony goes back to Antonius, the name of a Roman family made famous by Mark Antony; Lewis & Short record it only as a clan name, and its origin is unknown. Name lists give 'priceless' or 'praiseworthy', but those meanings are not supported by the dictionaries. The name honours St Anthony the Great and St Anthony of Padua. A well-known bearer is Anto Antony, MP for Pathanamthitta.
