Gatik (गतिक) comes from Sanskrit gatika, built on gati, "going" or "motion". Monier-Williams gives gatika as going, motion, course and condition, and also as a refuge, taking these senses from Wilson's dictionary, while gati itself covers gait, movement, progress and procedure. Indian name lists give Gatik as "fast", "swift" or "progressive". Speed is not quite what the dictionary says, but "progressive" is close to the sense of progress and onward movement in gati. Gatik is a short, modern name, and Gathik is the South Indian spelling.
