Japneet (ਜਪਨੀਤ) is a modern Punjabi name, used mainly for girls in Sikh families. Its first part is clear: jap is the repetition of a sacred word or of God's Name, which the Mahan Kosh describes as spoken aloud, whispered, or held silently in the mind. The word is central to Sikh devotion; Guru Nanak's opening composition in the Guru Granth Sahib is called the Japu, or Japji, and ਜਪ itself occurs in it on Ang 3. The ending -neet is harder. It is often linked with nīti, right conduct, but no source records how the name was formed, so we do not give a meaning for the whole. Some name lists explain Japneet as "one who recites prayers".
