Japji meaning
Japji (ਜਪਜੀ) is a Sikh girl's name of Punjabi origin.
The Japu, Guru Nanak's opening composition, with respectful -jī
Japji (ਜਪਜੀ) takes its name from the Japu, Guru Nanak's composition that opens the Guru Granth Sahib, with the respectful suffix -jī. Japu means recitation, the meditative repetition of a sacred word, and the Mahan Kosh calls the Japji the root of the Sikh daily prayer routine. Britannica places it right after the Mul Mantra at the start of the scripture and calls it the most important Sikh scripture, and it is the morning prayer that devout Sikhs recite each day. Its use as a girls' name is modern. Name lists render it 'holy chanting' or 'prayer', which stays faithful to the original sense of recitation.
