Jerome meaning
Jerome is a Christian boy's name of Greek origin.
Sacred name; from Greek hieros (holy) and onoma (name)
Jerome comes from the Greek Hierōnymos, "sacred name". It joins hieros, which Strong's Concordance gives as "sacred" or "holy", with onoma, "name", a word that Strong's notes can also stand for authority and character. The compound is not found in the Bible itself. It became a Christian name through Saint Jerome (about 347–420), the scholar who, at the request of Pope Damasus I, translated the Bible into Latin; his translation, the Vulgate, remained the standard Bible of the Western church until the Reformation. He is honoured as the patron saint of translators. Name lists give "sacred name" or "holy name", as in the Greek. In India the name is used in Christian families.
