Jot meaning
Jot (ਜੋਤ) is a Sikh unisex name of Punjabi origin, used for both girls and boys.
Light; the divine light; God
Jot (ਜੋਤ) is the Punjabi form of Sanskrit jyotis, light. The Mahan Kosh entry ਜੋਤਿ gives a wide range of senses: brightness and light, fire, the sun, moon and stars, moonlight and the power of sight, and, most importantly for the name, the Supreme Being and the inner, spiritual light. In Sikh teaching that one light is present in every being, as Guru Nanak's line 'ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ ਸੋਇ' says: within all is the light, and that light is the One. Jot is used on its own and, very often, as the second part of names such as Amanjot, Gurjot and Ekjot, for boys and girls alike.
