We haven't confirmed a dictionary meaning for the name itself. The meaning above is how families commonly use it.
Jovita comes from Iovita, the name of an early Christian martyr. Saints Faustinus and Jovita were brothers of Brescia in northern Italy, a priest and a deacon, beheaded in the second century and still honoured as the city's patrons on 15 February. The name is often explained as coming from Iovis, the Latin name of Jupiter, but we could not confirm that in the Latin dictionaries, and the gloss "joyful" seen on name lists looks like an association with the English word joy. Although the saint was a man, Jovita is a girl's name today, used in Mangalorean Catholic families.
