Lorenzo is the Italian and Spanish form of Laurentius, the Latin name behind English Laurence. Lewis & Short explain Laurentius as 'Laurentian', belonging to Laurentum, an old coastal town in Latium between Ostia and Lavinium. Baby-name lists usually give 'crowned with laurel', connecting the town with laurus, the laurel tree; that connection is popular but is not made in the dictionary entry. The name spread with St Laurence, a deacon of Rome martyred in 258, and later belonged to Lorenzo de' Medici, ruler of Renaissance Florence. Lorenzo is said lo-REN-zoh.
