Lucas is the Latin spelling of the Greek name Loukas, the evangelist known in English as Luke; the King James Bible itself calls him Lucas in Paul's greetings to Philemon. Strong's explains Loukas as a contraction of the Latin name Lucanus, which Lewis & Short give as 'of Lucania', a region of southern Italy. Name lists usually give 'light' or 'bringer of light', borrowing from Latin lux, but that is a popular reading. Lucas is used in many European languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French and Dutch, and was the name of the painter Lucas Cranach. It is said LOO-kus.
