Luca is the Italian form of Luke. It goes back to Greek Loukas, which Strong's Concordance explains as a shortened form of the Latin name Lucanus, and Lewis & Short give Lucanus as 'of Lucania', a district in the south of Italy. On baby-name lists Luca is usually 'light' or 'bringer of light', a sense borrowed from Latin lux; it is a popular reading rather than the recorded origin. The name has long been used in Italy, where it was borne by the sculptor Luca della Robbia and by Luca Pacioli, the mathematician who described double-entry bookkeeping. It is said LOO-kuh.
