Lincoln meaning
Lincoln is an international boy's name of Old English origin (from Celtic and Latin).
The city of Lincoln: Latin Lindum Colonia, from British lindo, "pool, lake"
Also used to mean: lake colony, town by the pool
Lincoln is the name of a cathedral city in eastern England. The Online Etymology Dictionary traces it through Old English Lindcylene to Latin Lindum Colonia: Lindum is a Latinised British word for a pool or lake, the same word as Welsh llyn, and colonia was a Roman settlement, here one for retired legion veterans. The place gave a surname, and the surname became a first name, chiefly in honour of Abraham Lincoln, the American president who ended slavery. Baby-name lists give 'lake colony' or 'town by the pool', which matches. It is said LING-kun; the second 'l' is silent.
