Jordan meaning
Jordan is an international and Christian boy's name of Hebrew origin, also used for girls.
A descender; the River Jordan, from yarad, "to go down"
Jordan is the name of the river that runs south from the hills of northern Israel to the Dead Sea. In Hebrew it is Yarden, which Brown-Driver-Briggs connects with the verb yarad, 'to go down', so the river is 'the descender'; Strong's gives the same sense. The river appears 182 times in the Hebrew Bible, and in the Gospels Jesus is baptised by John in the Jordan, which gave the name a place in Christian tradition. Baby-name lists give 'to flow down' or 'descend', which matches the Hebrew. In English-speaking countries Jordan is given to boys and girls. It is said JOR-dun.
