Aaron is the English form of the Hebrew Aharon (אַהֲרֹן), the name of the elder brother of Moses. In the Bible he speaks for Moses before Pharaoh and becomes the first high priest of Israel, and the Jewish priestly families, the kohanim, trace their descent from him. The meaning of the name itself is not known. Strong's Concordance lists it as of uncertain derivation and gives no translation, and the Brown-Driver-Briggs lexicon offers no etymology either. Name lists commonly give "exalted", "high mountain" or "mountain of strength", but the standard Bible dictionaries do not support these, so they are best read as later explanations rather than the name's proven sense. In India the name is used mainly in Christian families.
